SUNY Geneseo Student Wins National ADDY Award

A Student Silver ADDY® is awarded to local Geneseo student Ivan Cash who succeeded against tens of thousands of competitors on a national level.

SUNY Geneseo senior Ivan Cash was recently announced as a 2008 National ADDY® Award winner, earning a Student Silver ADDY®. Conducted by the American Advertising Federation, The ADDYs® are the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition, attracting over 50,000 entries every year. Before placing at the national level, the campaign advanced through three-tiers, winning at both the local Rochester area level and the subsequent district level, which includes submissions from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Washington D.C. The national award ceremony takes place June 10, in Atlanta, GA.

Silver ADDY Award winning creative by SUNY Geneseo senior Ivan Cash

The winning advertising campaign entails two interactive pieces whose aim is to promote literacy on behalf of the worldwide ProLiteracy organization based in Syracuse, NY. The ads, which are suited to run in a magazine, use folds to juxtapose gibberish words with legible text, giving the illusion of illiteracy that creates a powerful impact. The campaign received a student silver medal at the South African Loerie Awards in July of 2007. Cash, who is a communication major and graphics production minor, is responsible for the art direction and design of the winning campaign, while South African student Logan Broadley, of the Red and Yellow school in Cape Town, served as copywriter. The two students worked together while Cash studied abroad during the 2007 spring semester. Graduating on the 17th of May, Cash has an online portfolio available at www.ivancash.com.

Congratulations Ivan.

Student Portfolio Review an A+

On April 16, 2008 the Ninth Annual 2008 RAF Student Portfolio Review brought out the future stars in the fields of graphic design, advertising, new media, and copywriting. This one-night-only program was open to all senior-year college students with portfolios. The event was a big success, with over 50 students in attendance. But as Bob Kiesow, RAF Education Committee member, explains, “the event would be nonexistent if it weren’t for the 20 volunteer creative directors from the Rochester area who gave up their evening to review portfolios and offer the students feedback and career advice.”

A special RAF thank you to the event hosts: Post Central and The Studios.

Also, be sure to check out the photo album for this event.

RAF SpeeDate: Better Than Red Bull

On September 20th the RAF hosted a creative SPEEDATE event that connected area college students with communication professionals. It was the first time we’d ever hosted an event like this. Students got a chance to meet one-on-one with professionals, speed-date style, who answered industry questions, offered advice and made them feel like they were part of our creative community. The pros walked away re-energized by the experience. We got such great feedback from both groups that we’re planning another SPEEDATE for late October. The RAF plans to launch a mentorship program in late Fall to keep this great connection between students and professionals ongoing. Stay tuned for details.
