Generating creative heat when your life is on fire.

Keeping a hot creative streak alive is hard enough when the corners of your life are mom-could-even-visit tidy.

So how are you supposed to keep generating smart, fresh work when life is laced with personal loss, financial struggle, or heartbreak? You know time will eventually change your situation and feelings—but your creative deadline is two days from now and you’re not sure you’ll even make it past lunch.

As creatives it’s vital for us to be connected to our positive and negative emotional experiences—it’s an important source for much of our creative inspiration. But when emotions are a crushing tsunami, how can you survive and begin to allow for an even flow of creative thinking?

According to Julia Cameron, author of the classic guide to creative recovery “The Artist’s Way”, survival lies in sanity, and sanity lies in paying attention:

‘The reward for attention is always healing…In times of pain, when the future is too terrifying to contemplate and the past too painful to remember, I have learned to pay attention to right now. The precise moment I was in was always the only safe place for me. Each moment, taken alone, was always bearable…’

Often getting into the moment is something you can do at your desk over a cup of coffee and a good blank stare out the window. Maybe you have to find a spot in the sun somewhere. Wherever you are, in that moment and then the next, focus your attention on something that delights you. The pool of sunlight that rakes across your desk, the smell of fresh cut grass through your studio window, the sound of kids laughing on the playground outside your building.

Cameron believes ‘…the quality of life is in proportion, always, to the capacity for delight. The capacity for delight is the gift of paying attention.’

I’ve just got to say, from my own experience, it’s finding delight in the moments surrounding a dark event that’s pulled me though a workday or work session with my creative partner—productively. A heightened radar for delight can even lead you to more inspiration than you’ve experience in quite a while—or even ever. Also, know that pain, once passed through, will lead to emotional knowledge you can write about, create an image of, or use to better understand a once foreign demographic you need to communicate to.

Be judgmental. We insist. That’s what I told the 6 judges from various disciplines that judged the work for the 2010 Addy Awards. And well RAF members, we had a very successful first day here in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. They combed through all the print work and were very impressed. We are poised for another solid showing. But our, and their, job is not done. Sunday is the second day where broadcast, interactive, and campaigns will be judged. Pictures from the day one and two festivities will come on Sunday.

RAF member debuts film at Image Out

Post Central editor and RAF member Dave Marshall is debuting his documentary, “Swimming with Lesbians,” this Sunday at the Dryden. The Emmy-award winning director’s film documents the life of gay rights activist Madeline Davis as it chronicles the GLBT rights movement in Western New York. Marshall and Davis will be on hand for a Q&A session immediately after the screening. Click here for more information.

Webster, where life is worth printing.

This Friday one of the Rochester area’s newest cultural gem’s is having a Grand Opening. Dock 2 Letterpress is a printing company like no other. Specializing in handset typography and printing on antique hand fed printing presses. They celebrate an art form that since the age of computers has gone the way of the 8-track. It’s combing through drawers of wooden typefaces. It’s large iron printing machines powered by feet not electricity. It’s the feel of the deboss, and the smell of the ink that cannot be replaced by Photoshop.

This is not an official RAF event. It’s an event sponsored by the AIGA, and I encourage you to go out and see what the Dock 2 Letterpress is all about. Why? Because our new RAF mission is to strengthen our creative community, to educate, and inspire great work. And this shop is freaking sweet.

The Grand Opening is from 5pm to 9pm, this Friday the 18th.

RAF student member takes home national ADDY gold!

Huge props to David Nardone who scored some more hardware for his trophy shelf at the national ADDY Awards Show & Gala in Atlanta last weekend. David took home National ADDY Gold for his “Houdini” poster series for the Museum of Magic. David also won gold at the district and local levels.

Apparently, advertising talent runs in the family. David is the nephew of Rochester ad & marketing veteran Joe Nardone of Eastman Kodak.

With over 60,000 entries annually, the ADDY® Awards are the world’s largest and arguably toughest advertising competition. The ADDY® Awards represent the true spirit of creative excellence by recognizing all forms of advertising from media of all types, creative by all sizes and entrants of all levels from anywhere in the world. The American Advertising Federation, a not-for-profit industry association conducts the ADDY® Awards through its 200 member advertising clubs and 15 districts. It is the only creative awards program administered by the advertising industry for the industry.

RAF board members honored; Hayzlett tweets at Ad Council luncheon

john-myers1matt-jones1We are super proud that not one, but TWO RAF board members will be honored at the Ad Council’s annual Spring Luncheon Celebration on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Rochester. Matt Jones of Wegmans and John Myers of John Myers Photography will both receive the organization’s coveted Lantern Award.

Also, Kodak CMO and Twitterer extraordinaire, Jeff Hayzlett will demystify the benefits of tweeting and Joan Rivers celebrity apprenticeship with Donald Trump (still trying to figure out how that is going to work).
