20 Minutes & A Beer is an educational/social program started by the RAF as a way to showcase our local authorities on various topics that are relevant to our industry and market. On Tuesday October 19th at the Tap & Mallet, Freelance Illustrator Chris Lyons gave a talk about working without a net: Making the jump to freelance.

The RAF is the Rochester NY chapter of the National AAF and is a group dedicated to enriching the creative community through programs and sponsorships that educate, celebrate and inspire great work.

while i love my iphone am not afraid to show it, i have to wonder what my new email signature says about me. on-trend early adopter? check. but as a freelancer, it also admits to any client e-mail recipient that i am definitely not in my office. which is exactly where i should be, busily branding on their behalf. might as well admit my email was “sent from the elliptical machine at penfield fitness and racquet club”, “sent from my target holiday shopping extravaganza” or “sent from my long-overdue hair appointment at scott miller.”

so i ask you, status symbol sign-off or blatant out-of-office tip-off? discuss.

Freelance Creative Expo Recap

We held our 6th annual Freelance Creative Expo tonight at the Memorial Art Gallery. Over 30 exhibitors and about 150 attendees participated. I heard a lot of good comments and saw a lot of new faces. Many thanks to Diane Fitzgerald Harris for coordinating. Also, thanks to our great sponsors: Monroe Litho, Brewer & Newell, Digitech, A Touch of Excellence and AdHub for your tremendous support. Whether you were a sponsor, an attendee or an exhibitor, we really appreciate your participation. I’d love to hear what you thought of this year’s event.
